21 movie
if not for my brother’s GF, i won’t be able to watch this movie. she moved some files in this computer which includes this true-to-life story of a college math wiz who played blackjack and counted cards to earn $300,000 for his education. if you haven’t watched it yet, then do. very interesting if you like movies that can make you think. somehow it made me realize how “not so good” i am with math. and even “dazzling”.
even if 21 only got 35% on tomatometer, i still think it’s cool. maybe its because i didn’t know that it’s based on a book entitled Bringing Down the House – The Inside Story of Six M.I.T. Students Who Took Vegas for Millions. it’s different when you’ve read a story and then watched it on film. to compare them is inevitable and many fans of the book felt disappointed when the story is squeezed in to a movie-plot format.
almost all movies set in vegas make me want to go visit the place. one of the most tempting quotes that i’ve heard about vegas in this movie is this:
“you know, i think the best thing about vegas… is that you can become anyone you want.”
hmm… intriguing. anyway, if you’re into alternative rock music then you’ll absolutely love the soundtrack. it started with MGMT’s time to pretend. here’s the streaming music and lyrics of this song:
TIME TO PRETEND
MGMT
I’m feeling rough, I’m feeling raw, I’m in the prime of my life.
Let’s make some music, make some money, find some models for wives.
I’ll move to Paris, shoot some heroin, and fuck with the stars.
You man the island and the cocaine and the elegant cars.
This is our decision, to live fast and die young.
We’ve got the vision, now let’s have some fun.
Yeah, it’s overwhelming, but what else can we do.
Get jobs in offices, and wake up for the morning commute.
Forget about our mothers and our friends
We’re fated to pretend
To pretend
We’re fated to pretend
To pretend
I’ll miss the playgrounds and the animals and digging up worms
I’ll miss the comfort of my mother and the weight of the world
I’ll miss my sister, miss my father, miss my dog and my home
Yeah, I’ll miss the boredom and the freedom and the time spent alone.
There’s really nothing, nothing we can do
Love must be forgotten, life can always start up anew.
The models will have children, we’ll get a divorce
We’ll find some more models, everything must run it’s course.
We’ll choke on our vomit and that will be the end
We were fated to pretend
To pretend
We’re fated to pretend
To pretend
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah
—
enjoy!
